9-year-old Boy Missing with Bag of Cash

The father of a 9-year-old boy who disappeared with thousands of dollars in cash said Sunday afternoon his son was still missing. Ahmad Mugiarto said his son ran away from home Thursday night, taking with him more than US$10,000.
He said the Cinere Police had determined his son changed some of the money into rupiah at a money changer in Melawai. "He, accompanied by a mall security officer, exchanged about US$800 at a money changer. My son then bought an MP3 player and a cellular phone at a shopping center in South Jakarta," said Ahmad, a resident of Cinere, Depok. "I kept the dollars in my suitcase and he took all of the money," he said.
The mall security officer told Elshinta radio on Saturday that the boy was "smart". He said the boy managed to convince him to accompany him to the money changer.
The officer said the boy also bought a PlayStation 3 game console with the money. The officer said the boy spent the night at a security post at the mall. "The following morning he asked me to take him to school," the officer said. A police report says the boy entered the school and told his teacher he was going to practice basketball, and that he never returned.
Ahmad said his wife grounded their son the night before he ran away for not doing his homework, and made him sleep in the living room. "I'm just afraid that my son is being used by somebody else who knew that he had thousands of dollars in his pocket. I want to know where he is," he said. According to Ahmad, the day his son ran away from home, he was wearing a sleeveless black-and-white basketball shirt with the word "VIDI" on it. Police are still investigating.
